Frame samples and custom framing design at Image & Frame
Old Town Scottsdale · framing showroom, frame collection and workshop

Design

Start with the artwork.

We look at the piece first, then work through profile, finish, spacing and proportion. The room can matter, but the artwork leads the decision.

Profile & finish

Narrow, deep, flat, stepped or carved profiles change the edge around the work. Wood, metal, leaf, lacquer, patina and hand-finished surfaces all respond differently to color and light.

Space around the work

Mats, liners, float margins and spacers control the space between the artwork and the frame. That space is part of the overall proportion.

The frame collection

The collection runs from contemporary profiles and hardwoods to welded metal, leather and carved or gilded finished-corner frames. We pull from that range as the project requires.

Construction

Construction is part of the framing.

Mounting, spacing, glazing, backing and hardware are chosen for the material, condition, size and display location.

Support

  • Stable boards and supports
  • Enough depth and clearance
  • Structure sized for the finished weight

Mounting

  • Methods appropriate to the material
  • Reversible approaches when practical
  • No unnecessary permanent attachment

Glazing

  • Glass or acrylic based on the piece
  • Reflection, weight and breakage considered
  • UV filtering when appropriate

Backing & hardware

  • Rigid backing where needed
  • Protection from dust and contact
  • Hardware sized for the finished piece

Protection

Support changes with the material.

A watercolor, canvas, textile and photograph should not all be handled the same way.

Works on paper

Paper may be window-matted or floated. Hinges, corners or other supports are selected for the sheet and media, with proper space from the glazing.

Canvas

Canvas framing starts with the stretcher or strainer, bracing, edge condition and tension. The outer frame is designed around that structure.

Textiles & objects

Textiles and dimensional work often need broader support, custom mounting, additional depth and deliberate glazing clearance.

Not every piece needs the most expensive glazing. The choice depends on the artwork, lighting, size, reflection, breakage risk and budget.

From design to workshop

Once the design is approved, we document exactly how it will be built.

Measurements, materials, mounting, glazing and hardware are recorded before fabrication and fitting begin.

Examine

We check the medium, condition, edges, dimensions and any existing mounts or frames.

Specify

We record the approved design and source or fabricate any specialty components.

Build & fit

The workshop builds the support and frame, fits the piece, installs hardware and completes a final review.

Delivery, installation, crating and specialized shipping can be coordinated when a project needs them.

Appointment

Bring the piece.

The artwork is enough to begin. Room photos, paint, fabric or finish samples can help when the frame needs to relate closely to an interior.
