Large framing has to work structurally before it can look effortless.

As a frame gets larger, spans, glazing weight, backing, transport and installation start driving the construction. We plan those things early so the finished piece can still look clean and intentional.

Build for span

A large frame needs enough section and enough support.

Making a small profile longer does not automatically make a large frame. The moulding, joinery and internal support have to match the span, weight and shape of the finished piece.

The solution may be a heavier moulding, laminated or built-up support, hardwood structure, metal reinforcement, cross-bracing, rigid backing or a frame designed specifically around the installation.

Large glazed work

At large sizes, glazing is also a weight and safety decision.

Glass stays rigid but gets heavy and can break. Acrylic is much lighter and shatter-resistant, but thickness and support matter because large sheets can flex.

Weight

Glass: Heavy; load rises quickly with area. Acrylic: Much lighter, which can be a major advantage on large work.

Rigidity

Glass: High at standard picture-framing thickness. Acrylic: Depends strongly on sheet thickness and span; large thin sheets can bow.

Breakage

Glass: Can break and create sharp fragments. Acrylic: Shatter-resistant and safer for many transport/large-scale situations.

Static

Glass: Low static, which is helpful around pastel, charcoal and other loose or powdery media. Acrylic: Standard acrylic can carry static; anti-static products are available.

Surface

Glass: Hard and scratch resistant. Acrylic: More easily scratched; coated products improve performance.

Backing and bracing support the whole frame

Rigid backing can protect a canvas from puncture, reduce vibration and add stability. On large works on paper, a more rigid back mat or panel may be necessary. The exact build depends on what the artwork can safely contact and how the package will move.

Large canvas

Large canvases need a real brace plan.

The stretcher is carrying fabric tension across long spans. Heavier perimeter bars, crossbars and custom construction may be needed to keep it square and flat.

Use enough frame section

A narrow light-duty bar can bow inward under tension. Deeper or engineered profiles give the perimeter more stiffness.

Add bracing where spans get long

Crossbars and intersecting braces distribute load and help keep the stretcher square.

Back protection

Protect the back

A rigid backing board helps protect the canvas from impact, dirt, vibration and short environmental fluctuations.

Custom fabrication

Custom supports for exceptional sizes

Very large or unusual canvases may call for custom spliced hardwood, engineered wood or metal/wood support systems.

The route is part of the design

The route to the wall is part of the build.

Doorways, elevators, stair turns, hallways and installation height can change the construction before the frame is ordered. We would rather solve that on paper than at the front door.

    Measure the artwork

    Outside size, depth, current support, weight and any fragile projections establish the starting geometry.

    Measure the route

    Doors, elevators, stairs, turns, hall widths and ceiling heights can limit the size or orientation of an assembled frame.

    Decide how it will travel

    Some projects can travel finished; others need detachable, folding, sectional or on-site assembly logic.

  4. 04

    Plan packing and handling

    Handling frames, rigid backing, face protection and transport packaging are selected for the vulnerability of the piece.

  5. 05

    Plan the installation

    Wall construction, hanging hardware, access equipment and installer needs are confirmed before delivery.

Delivery and installation

Installation is matched to the artwork and the site.

We coordinate with outside art-handling and installation specialists when the size, weight or site calls for it. Different projects need different crews and equipment.

We coordinate the frame with the way the finished piece has to be handled, moved and installed.
